The right time of year…

Now JT and his Monster OH buck have proved me wrong from the start here, but generally late Sept and early Oct. can be tough times to kill deer. Many times they stay in the woods eating oaks, are hard to pattern, etc. I find that this is a great time to practice management.

Today is the opener for KY’s crossbow season. I think this is fantastic for kids that aren’t big enough to draw a compound bow. They can get the bowhunting experience of being up close and personal with deer, and they have the firepower to make a clean harvest.

It is also a great time of year to thin the doe population on given properties. Doe hunting with a bow is always fun. It is also very good bowhunting practice to hone our skills for when we are hunting big bucks. I have taken 4 does this week with my bow, and hopefully my twins will take a couple more in the next 2 days.

We have the Carbon Express Crossbow tuned up and ready, and the boys have been shooting all summer. They have gotten pretty accurate for 9 year olds as you can see from the photo, so hopefully I will have something to report tomorrow and some venison for the freezer. get out there, shoot some does, and Hunt Hard…Tim H.
