Super Cold Good Time To Harvest Deer

Much of the country has been hit by a severe cold spell as of late, and this is a great time to get that trophy that has eluded you, or fill the freezer. For the most part the rut is over in most of the country, and with bitter temps and in many locations, snow, deer must be on their feet feeding. This is a great time to catch trophy bucks on food sources during daylight, and it is a perfect time to harvest does for management or for the freezer. Food lots, corn fields, or in places where legal on corn you put out are top places to hunt.

The past two afternoons I have hunted with my son Will. He took a few does earlier, so we are trying to find him a decent buck here in KY. I am proud of the 10 year old as he has passed 3 small bucks and a pile of does over the past two hunts. The highs here in KY have been around 20 with lows in single digits. He hung in there and didn’t even pick up his crossbow.

Looks like it may warm up in the 30’s and 40’s for the next few days, but Sunday another winter storm comes in with some very low temps on Monday and Tuesday. I think we will try it with a muzzleloader early next week. There is a decent 10 pointer in our area that Will wants, he has just been giving us the slip. Hopefully it will get better next week.

Get out there and take advantage of this weather. One thing I can highly recommend is taking a small propane heater to a blind to help make things more tolerable. We had deer at 4 yards last night and they didn’t pay attention at all to the heater. The wind was right, of course, but not one deer heard or smelled the heater. You gotta do what you can do when things get nasty. The Heater Body Suit is also a great option this time of year whether you are in a blind or treestand.

That’s a great story, I’ll share my own recent experience.

Some friends and I (five total) went to my lodge near Redfield SD. We all had antlerless deer tags and I wanted to thin out the herd a bit. The weather was terrible, high winds, 20 below temps and blowing snow. Couldn’t ask for a better chance at adventure!!

The only way into the interior of the property was by snow mobile. We took nine deer in two days, it was awesome.

If you get a chance, always go late season hunting, even if you don’t get some meat you will have something to talk about with your friends for years to come. 😉
