October in Montana by Tim Herald

He wasn’t the biggest buck in the world, but he was a 5.5 year old 8 pointer that would go about 130ish. He was not quite as big as Eric or I had guessed, but I have to say that I was not at all disappointed as it was absolutely one of the most fun whitetail hunts of my life I have killed a few does on the ground with my bow, but that was the first time I had ever stalked a mature whitetail with a bow, and it was a real rush.

The guy hunting with me ended up missing a 150” ten point later in the week, but Eric told him he could come back during rifle season and fill his tag. I thought that was going above and beyond for an outfitter. I ended my trip by duck hunting with some of Eric’s guides, and we killed 25 mallards on the last afternoon from layout blinds in a wheat stubble field. That was something I hadn’t done in a long time, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I saw lots and lots of mule deer on the trip, and Eric has a few properties where he only shoots deer over 170”. I may try to put a group together and go out and do a rifle mule deer hunt there next year. If you are interested in joining me, drop me a note to, and maybe we can hunt Montana together in 2014.

One last thing, I apologize for no harvest photos with this story. I had a problem with my camera/photos…
