Mississippi Deer and Hog Hunt with Trophy Class Outfitters

I just returned from a really fun combo deer and hog hunt down in Mississippi with Trophy Class Outfitters. My good friend Ed Welsh went with me. Ed hunted hogs with his Ruger 7mm mag and I bowhunted deer and hogs with my Hoyt AlphaMax. I took along my Remington 700 as well. Trophy Class Outfitters offers guided hunts in six states and just opened this new camp in MS over the summer. It’s located about 15 miles south of Monticello or about 75 miles south of Jackson (nearest airport). They have 2,000 acres of beautiful Pearl River bottom ground full of Cypress sloughs, hardwoods, white pines, overgrown clear cut thickets and strategically located food plots. Head guide Art Mott is an experienced, very successful hunter and part of the Primos film team. Art is one of those special guys, five minutes after I met him I felt like he’d been a buddy for years. Art’s wife Darlene kept the lodge in order and cooked up some delicious southern meals. In short, the Mott’s treated us like family.

The cold snap that hit most of the eastern U.S. didn’t help the hog activity, it basically shut down. In the weeks prior to our arrival, Art had been getting tons of trail cam pictures of 10-20 hogs at a time coming to his stand sites. The good news was the whitetail activity was very good in the cold weather. The pre-rut activity was just beginning, we saw several scrapes and I saw bucks chasing on two separate occasions. I took advantage of the excellent deer movement and harvested a doe the first morning. Art wants hunters to harvest quite a few does this year for management purposes. Later that same day in a different tree stand, I shot a nice 9 point buck at about 25 yards. The Slick Trick broadhead hit just a tick high and the blood trail was light, we found him piled up about 125 yards away. Not a bad way to start out the 3-day hunt!

The next two days we hunted several different stand locations across the property. Ed and I saw a bunch of deer but only two hogs that didn’t give us a shot. It was disappointing that Ed didn’t get his hog but he enjoyed the experience and would go back in a heartbeat.
