Here is a mule deer hunting report from another father and son team, Angel and Derrik Merino from Utah. They were hunting up in Idaho during a general rifle season. Wow, these guys can really shoot! Guess all that summertime practice paid off. Congrats to you both and thanks for sharing your hunt with all the readers at American-Hunter.com.

2010 Idaho Rifle Mule deer

I had a very good mule deer hunt in Idaho this year for me and my little boy Derrik. There are tons of hunters in our unit but we hiked away from the crowd to our “spot”. I had told Derrik that we needed to be there way before the sun comes up because all of the hunters will push everything right to us. For 2 days prior to the hunt we had watched a nice 4×5 from over 1,000 yards to avoid bumping him. His was on the hit list for sure.

Opening morning I was up at 03:30 all nerved up and excited for Derrik’s first deer hunt. His been going with me since he was about 4 years old but this was the first time he would be packing his own gun. We had got to where we wanted to be and as the sun started to rise, right away we started seeing deer. A few smaller bucks but not the 4X5…yet. Like we had figured, everyone was pushing the deer right to us. We were in a canyon with no other hunters. Then Derrik whispered to me, “there comes some more deer out down in the draw below us”. First one was the 4X5. He feed up the canyon towards us, we set up and ranged him at 510 yards. Asked Derrik if we was ready, he couldn’t get on the buck cause of the steep angle. The deer had us pegged and was getting nervous. I told him I was going to take the shot before he blows out of there. He said shoot before we lose him. I took the shot and he dropped in his tracks. As we were taking pictures of my buck Derrik said, dad there’s a buck across the canyon. I set up the spotting scope and told him it was a 3 point about 20 inches wide. Ranged him and told him 812 yards. We had been shooting all summer at targets from 100 to 600 yards out but not 800…. He already had him in his scope when he told me, “Dad let me take the shot I can hit him from here”. I told him if you think you can, then take the shot and hold over him about 2 feet and shoot. All was quiet for about 20 or 30 seconds, then the shot rang out…whoopp!!! “Derrik you hit him and he’s down”… He looked at me, put him fist towards me and said “bet you never seen that before”. We called down to camp with our radios and all my buddies were so excited for Derrik! Within about an hour they had 3 pack horses up to us and we were back in camp around noon.

What a great first hunt for my son!
