Christmas Gift…

I reported a week or so that I was a little burned out on deer hunting. That was definitely true. One of my sons has just had a terrible time killing a turkey. We have tried for 4 years, and something always goes wrong. His twin brother has had pretty good luck with turkeys, so it has been pretty frustrating for Will.

We decided to go give it a try yesterday, Dec 23rd. We would hunt on a long narrow food plot that turkeys frequent, and if they walk through the plot in front of the blind, they will be in crossbow range.

We settled in and waited. I checked a Covert trail camera that was on the plot as we sat there and there were tons of turkeys and some pretty good deer on the SD card. Actually, there had been a big group of gobblers through about 25 minutes before we arrived. We had high hopes that something would show up.

About two hours into our hunt, I saw a hen pop out of the woods about 150 yards away. I made a couple soft yelps, and she marched straight toward us. It took her about 5 minutes, but she ended up straight in front of us at 22 yards. Will was ready on his Carbon Express Covert 3.5 crossbow, and he center punched her. The G5 T3 broadhead did its job, and she was down in about 7 yards.

WOW…Will was so pumped. He has shot a bunch of deer ( 3 this year with the crossbow), but I have never seen him so excited. On the way home, he had to call his grandparents and tell them, couldn’t wait to tell mom, and when we were watching TV last night, he looked up at me and said, “Dad, I am so happy.” I thought he was really looking forward to Christmas, but he told me he was just so happy to have finally killed his first turkey.

I never knew a hen turkey could mean so much. This was a wonderful Christmas present for Will (and me), and I have to admit, it really got me recharged about hunting in general. I think both my boys and I are going to give it one more try for deer and turkey the day after Christmas, and hopefully we will end our season on a high note. The weatherman says we are going to get snow tonight and tomorrow, so hopefully we can get to our hunting spot on Sunday.

  1. Aw, this was a really good post. Finding the time and actual effort to make a really good article… but what can I say…
I hesitate a whole lot and never seem to get anything done.
