Calming Monster Bucks

Illinois buck 2012

Beating a mature bucks nose is what its all about! Show me a big whitetail that has survived to be 4, 5 or even 6 years old and I wil show you an animal that has learned to play the wind to his advantage, he has to or he dies, plain and simple. By the time a monster buck has reached maturity he has become a survival expert and he trusts his nose above all other senses. I have based my entire strategy on hunting giant bucks around the wind because I know how important it is. If one thing changed my success ten fold, it was when I quit hunting the winds that were good for me and started hnting winds that were good for him!

That’s right, I said winds that were good for him. In order to catch a mature buck on his feet during daylight ( other than the rut ), he has to feel comfortable enough to get up and move. When does a buck feel comfortable, yep you know when! When we give a mature animal the wind to his advantage though that can cause issues for us as hunters. Sometimes its a matter of splitting hairs, a wind switch of 10 degrees one way or the other can be the difference between success and failure. I’m sure everyone of you reading this goes through the same ritual I do when it comes to scent elimination. Washing clothes and our stinky butts in scent free detergent, putting clothes directly into scent free containers, dressing in the field, scent elimination spray – the list goes on and on. There is one more thing I do that you need to consider though, and it has saved my stinky butt more than once!
