The Rocket steelhead 100 is a mechanical, three blade head of the swing open type. The cutting diameter is a modest 1 1/8”. The blades are not very sharp out of the package. They don’t come close to shaving hair, but will hang on your fingernail when you drag them across.

They are very accurate heads. Shooting just like field points, which is not surprise if you see how small they are in the closed position. In the orange test the head fully opened by the time it exited the back. In the plywood the steel head had no problem fully penetrating, but it did bend one blade slightly. Not enough to worry about though. In the steel drum it penetrated the front and almost made it all the way out the back.  It did however break off two blades. The steel heads are a very good head all and all with excellent penetration. They have excellent accuracy, open fast, and penetrate very well. The blades are not nearly as sharp as I would like them, and could be stronger at the hinge pins. I don’t think you will loose any blades in deer, unless maybe you hit a rear leg or something super hard, but it is something to consider.

As a side note, some of you may have your records showing the steelheads scoring a 22 instead of a 21. I made an error in my first report by not deducting a point for the head loosing blades in the steel drum. It really doesn’t change my opinion of the head, and this is only one of two mechanical heads that I have tested that actually penetrate as well as many fixed blade heads, and would be a good choice for those with lower Kinetic energy setups that still want to shoot a mechanical head.
