A Time of Preparation

Tim Herald is back at it, getting ready for his first hunt of many he has planned for this fall. He asked me to post a few of his first articles for August because he’s swamped getting ready to leave the country for a safari. Happy to do that. Like Tim, and most of you I’m excited and can hardly wait for opening day!!

August and September are a Time of Preparation…

It is only a few days into August, but things have really escalated for me lately. I have my new Elite Pure bow setup with an IQ Bow site and the new Carbon Express Maxima Blue Streak arrows, and have been practicing almost every morning for a couple weeks. This combo has me shooting better than I have in years, and I need it! Along with archery practice, I have been getting my DL Covert Trail cams set out here locally. For the first time in many years, I am going to try to film an early bow hunt for deer here in central KY with my good buddy Steve Hartley of Steve Hartley Outfitters (click here for reviews or call 502-803-5899). I have only had cameras out for about 3-4 days, and we have a ton of bucks on them. One site has at least 15. We haven’t picked up any of the monsters Steve knows he has yet, but we have a bunch of nice mature deer, and the big boys will show up soon.

I have been toying with the new Covert Special Ops cameras that send either or both texts and emails, and it is a blast seeing the deer within a minute of them being at my camera. I am really looking forward to our September bow opener here in KY.

I have really concentrated on getting back in shape as well this summer. I am hitting the gym 6-7 days a week doing a little weight work and a lot of cardio. I am trying to run at least 7 miles of hills every day on the elliptical, and last week I did 12.5 and 11.5 miles on successive days. I feel better than I have in a long time and weigh less than I have in 16 years. That should help come September when I go to New Mexico for an elk hunt.

Along with all of this, I am getting ready to go to Mozambique on Monday for what should be a great safari. More on that in another post. I hope everyone is getting prepared for the fall seasons. They are just around the corner. Prepare now to make things much easier and more successful for the hunt!

Hunt hard…Tim H.
