I Tips on Turkey Calling!
By Shane Holcomb: Preston Pittman Pro-Staffer and Professional guide. 1.) Get yourself a good locator call (crow, owl, gobble box, etc.). Shane’s personal favorite is the owl call and uses the crow call for midday locating. Always start the morning off with using your locator call. 2.) Find a turkey call that you can use comfortably. It doesn’t have to be the newest or most expensive call on the market. Just find one that you can use easily (box call, slate call, mouth call or whatever). 3.) When you setup on a roosted turkey call softly at first to test the bird. This will indicate whether the tom is hot or not! If he gobbles at soft calling he is definitely a workable bird! 4.) Use the buddy system. Sometimes two hunters can get a proper setup on a turkey. Example, one caller is positioned 30 yards behind the shooter to make a hen sound farther away. Using this tatic if the turkey hangs up at 60 yards from the caller the gobbler is in the shooter’s effective range of 30 yards.
