Raglin This is that busy time of year when sportsmen everywhere
are double-checking their bows for correct tuning, making sure that arrows are
straight, broadheads extra sharp and fresh batteries are in the old flashlight.
The opening of bow season is right around the corner and there are a lot
of details that need to be taken care of. However
while you are busy doing all of these necessary things concerning bows, strings
and such, I think it is equally
important for guys and gals to be working on the mental end of the hunt as well.
In order to get me ‘mental game’ headed in the right direction here
is one of the things I do that you may find helpful Each day in my mind I visualize myself harvesting a deer.
In fact I do this several times each day and I begin doing this several
weeks before the season actually opens. If
you are an elk hunter or after some other type of big game animal you can
substitute that for my deer. I’m
sure it will still work. Each day I see myself there waiting with bow in hand.
I hear and then see the deer. He
comes in. I watch. I
follow the animal. I draw.
I make the shot. Perfect hit! I
go through the whole scenario from start to finish.
I am happy to announce that I have never missed one of these shots yet. This may sound silly at first. But don’t get too hasty in passing judgment on this train
of though. I know of at least one
other professional who would agree with me that this kind of thinking is very
relevant to help guarantee success. Former all-Pro Indianapolis Colts kicker Cary Blanchard led
the NFL in field-goal accuracy in 1996. He
made 90% of his attempts. “If you don’t think you’re going to make it,” he
says, “you won’t. I kick a few
into the practice net and picture them going through the uprights. Before running onto the filed, that’s all I see.
Over and over again, me kicking that ball through the uprights.
I block everything else out of my mind.
All the players around me, the few choice words from the other team, the
crowd noise, I never hear nay of that. I
just see myself making the kick good; right up until the time I actually kick
the ball. The crowd will let you
know if you missed.” We have the right to choose what we feed into our brains. Feed it positive messages over and over each day. Practicing the tactic I’m suggesting; it may not help you kick any 40 yard field goals, but I’ll bet you will see a big improvement in your shooting when that moment of truth arrives and Mr. Big comes lubering in at 18 yards. I mean it will be no big deal. Just the week before you made 47 perfect shots on bucks that were a whole lot bigger than this one. Right? Click here for more great Deer Hunting Articles and Tips! |
